CONCEPT 35 OF 60 — PILLAR 5

Atmosphere & Weather

A thick blanket of air sits above us — it makes the sky blue, brings the rain, and keeps us alive.

BIG IDEA
The atmosphere is the layer of air wrapped around Earth. It creates our weather, shields us from the Sun's harmful rays, and gives us the air we breathe.
🌤️

Why is the sky blue?

Sunlight looks white but is actually made of seven colours. When it hits the tiny molecules in air, the blue light scatters the most in all directions. That scattered blue is what we see filling the whole sky.

— WHY ARE SUNSETS RED?

At sunset, light travels through much more air. The blue is all scattered away, leaving only red and orange to reach your eyes — a red sunset.

🌧️

Why does it rain?

The Sun heats water in rivers, ponds and seas, turning it into water vapour that rises. Higher up the air is cold, so the vapour cools into tiny droplets — these form clouds. When the droplets grow heavy enough, they fall as rain.

THE WATER CYCLE

EvaporationCondensationPrecipitation → water flows back to rivers and seas. This cycle never stops — the same water has been recycled for billions of years.

🏔️

Why is it colder on hills?

You might think hills are closer to the Sun, so they should be hotter. But air is not heated directly by the Sun — it is heated by the ground. The ground absorbs the Sun's heat and warms the air above it. The higher you go, the farther from this warm ground, so the air gets thinner and colder.

Temperature drops by about 6.5°C for every 1000 m you climb. That's why tall mountain peaks stay snow-capped even when the valleys below are warm.

💨

Why does wind blow?

When air is heated, it becomes lighter and rises, and cooler air rushes in to take its place. That rushing air is wind. By day, land heats faster than the sea, so a cool breeze blows from sea to land. At night it reverses.

Why does the sky appear blue?
क्योंकि समुद्र नीला है और आसमान उसे reflect करता है — Because the sea is blue and the sky reflects it
Because air molecules scatter blue light the most
Because the Sun emits blue light
How do clouds form?
From smoke gathering in the air

01 — THE FIVE LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

Ground to Space

The atmosphere is divided into five layers based on how temperature changes with height. NEET tests the order, the temperature trend, and what happens in each.

🛰️
EXOSPHEREबहिर्मंडलOutermost layer, merges into space. Satellites orbit here. Air is almost absent.
700+ km→ space
🌌
THERMOSPHEREतापमंडलVery hot (up to 2000°C). Auroras (Northern Lights) occur here. ISS orbits here.
80–700 kmtemp ↑
☄️
MESOSPHEREमध्यमंडलColdest layer (−90°C). Meteors burn up here — the shooting stars we see.
50–80 kmtemp ↓
🛩️
STRATOSPHEREसमतापमंडलContains the OZONE LAYER, which absorbs UV rays. Jet planes fly here (smooth, no weather).
12–50 kmtemp ↑
🌧️
TROPOSPHEREक्षोभमंडलWe live here. ALL weather happens here. Temperature falls with height (6.5°C/km).
0–12 kmtemp ↓
🧠

Memory trick (bottom to top): T-S-M-T-E — "The Sky Must Touch Everything" → Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere.

02 — TEMPERATURE: WHY IT GOES UP AND DOWN

The Zigzag Profile

A favourite NEET point: temperature does NOT simply fall with height. It falls, rises, falls, then rises again — because different layers are heated by different sources.

LayerTemp trendWhy
TroposphereFalls ↓Heated by ground below; farther up = colder
StratosphereRises ↑Ozone layer absorbs UV → heats this layer
MesosphereFalls ↓No ozone, no direct heating → coldest layer
ThermosphereRises ↑Absorbs high-energy X-rays & UV from Sun
⚠️

The boundaries between layers are named: Troposphere ends at the Tropopause, Stratosphere at the Stratopause, Mesosphere at the Mesopause. These names appear in NEET.

03 — COMPOSITION OF THE ATMOSPHERE

What Air Is Made Of

This connects to Concept 26 (Matter) and Concept 32 (Reactions). NEET expects the exact percentages.

Gas%Role
Nitrogen (N₂)78%Inert; dilutes oxygen; used by plants via fixation
Oxygen (O₂)21%Respiration & combustion; made by photosynthesis
Argon (Ar)0.93%Inert noble gas
CO₂0.04%Photosynthesis, greenhouse effect
OtherstraceNeon, Helium, Methane, water vapour, Ozone
💡

Although CO₂ is only 0.04%, it is hugely important — it drives photosynthesis (Concept 34) and the greenhouse effect. Small quantity, massive impact.

04 — THE OZONE LAYER

Earth's Sunscreen

The ozone layer (O₃) sits in the stratosphere and absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, UV would damage DNA and cause skin cancer and crop failure.

🔬

Ozone formation: O₂ + UV → 2O, then O + O₂ → O₃. CFCs (from old refrigerators/aerosols) destroy ozone, creating the "ozone hole." This links to environmental Biology in NEET.

05 — NEET-STYLE MCQs

Practice Questions

Q1: In which atmospheric layer does all weather occur, and why?
A) Troposphere — it contains almost all water vapour and is heated from the ground, causing convection
B) Stratosphere — because the ozone layer is there
C) Thermosphere — because it is the hottest layer
✅ Correct! The troposphere holds nearly all the water vapour and is heated from below by the ground. This creates convection currents — rising warm air, sinking cool air — which drive all weather. The stratosphere above is stable (no vertical mixing), which is why jets fly there.
Q2: Temperature rises with height in the stratosphere. What causes this?
A) It is closer to the Sun
B) The ozone layer absorbs UV radiation, releasing heat
C) Hot air from the troposphere rises into it
✅ Correct! The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the Sun and converts it to heat. So the higher you go in the stratosphere (closer to peak ozone heating), the warmer it gets — the reverse of the troposphere.
Q3: Why do meteors ("shooting stars") burn up in the mesosphere?
A) Because the mesosphere is the hottest layer
B) Friction with air molecules generates intense heat as they fall fast
C) The ozone layer dissolves them
✅ Correct! This connects to Concept 33 (Friction). Meteors enter at huge speeds; friction with air molecules in the mesosphere generates enormous heat, burning them up before they reach the ground. The mesosphere is actually the coldest layer — but friction does the heating.
Q4: Which gas makes up the largest part of the atmosphere, and what is its main role?
A) Oxygen (21%) — for respiration
B) Nitrogen (78%) — inert, dilutes oxygen and is fixed by plants/bacteria
C) Carbon dioxide (0.04%) — for photosynthesis
✅ Correct! Nitrogen is 78% of the atmosphere. It is largely inert (unreactive), which is important — pure oxygen would make fires uncontrollable. Nitrogen is also essential for life: it's fixed by bacteria and lightning into compounds plants can use (the Nitrogen Cycle, a key NEET topic).
Q5: How does the ozone layer protect life on Earth, and what threatens it?
A) It traps heat like a blanket; threatened by oxygen
B) It absorbs harmful UV radiation; threatened by CFCs which break down ozone
C) It produces oxygen; threatened by nitrogen
✅ Correct! The ozone layer (O₃) absorbs most of the Sun's harmful UV radiation, which would otherwise damage DNA, cause skin cancer, and harm crops. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) from old refrigerators and aerosols break ozone apart, creating the "ozone hole." Do not confuse this with the greenhouse effect (which traps heat) — ozone is about UV protection.
