Cell: The Unit of Life कोशिका

Just as bricks build a wall, cells build every living thing — the smallest unit of life.

BIG IDEA
Every living thing — a tree, an ant, a fish, and you — is made of tiny cells. The cell is the smallest unit of life, so small you need a microscope to see it.
🧱

What is a cell?

Look at a wall — it's made of small bricks. Each brick is separate, but together they form the whole wall. In the same way, every living body is built from tiny cells. The cell is the smallest unit of life — life's smallest "brick."

A DISCOVERY STORY

About 350 years ago, Robert Hooke looked at cork through a microscope and saw tiny box-like rooms, like a honeycomb. He named them "cells." Since then we've known that life is built from cells.

🔎

Why are cells so small?

Some living things are just a single cell (like bacteria) — and some have trillions of cells (your body has about 37 trillion!). Cells stay small so they can quickly take in food and oxygen and push out waste. A giant cell would struggle to do this.

What's inside a cell?

Think of a cell as a tiny home. Every home has an outer boundary, a "head" that makes decisions, and a space inside where everything happens. A cell is just like that — for now we'll learn just three key parts.

THREE MAIN PARTS

Cell Membrane: the outer layer that decides what enters and leaves — like a door and wall.

Nucleus: the "head" of the cell that controls everything — it holds life's instructions (DNA).

Cytoplasm: the jelly-like material inside where all the cell's work takes place.

Plant cells vs animal cells

Not all cells are the same. Plant cells and animal cells have some big differences — and these differences explain why plants and animals are so different.

Plant Cell
Animal Cell

Why do plants stand upright while our bodies are soft? Because every plant cell has a strong wall around it. Our cells have no such wall — which is why we need a skeleton of bones to hold us up.

📋 Summary —

▼  NEET / PMT — Advanced Section
01 — THE CELL THEORY

Cell Theory — The Foundation of Biology

Proposed by Schleiden, Schwann, and later Virchow. This is one of biology's most fundamental ideas and is tested directly in NEET.

📜

The three core statements: (1) All living organisms are made of one or more cells. (2) The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. (3) All cells arise from pre-existing cells ("Omnis cellula e cellula" — Virchow).

02 — CELL ORGANELLES & THEIR FUNCTIONS

The Organelles — Each With a Job

The basic section called these "the parts of the home." At NEET level, each organelle has a precise structure and function. Note the famous nicknames — examiners love them.

03 — PROKARYOTIC vs EUKARYOTIC CELLS

Two Fundamental Cell Types

The single biggest division in all of biology. The key difference: whether the DNA sits inside a true membrane-bound nucleus.

Practice Questions

Q1: Which statement is part of the Cell Theory?
A) Cells can arise spontaneously from non-living matter
B) All cells arise from pre-existing cells
C) Only plants are made of cells
✅ Correct! Virchow's famous addition: "Omnis cellula e cellula" — every cell comes from a pre-existing cell. This disproved spontaneous generation. The other two statements of cell theory: all organisms are made of cells, and the cell is the basic unit of life.
Q2: The mitochondria is called the "powerhouse of the cell" because it — सूत्रकणिका को "कोशिका का पावरहाउस" क्यों कहते हैं?
A) Stores the cell's DNA
B) Is the site of respiration, releasing energy as ATP
C) Makes proteins for the cell
✅ Correct! Mitochondria carry out cellular respiration — breaking down glucose with oxygen to release energy stored as ATP. This connects to Concept 32 (respiration is a redox reaction) and Concept 31 (energy forms). Ribosomes make proteins; the nucleus stores DNA.
Q3: A key difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells is that prokaryotes —
A) Lack a true membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
B) Are always larger than eukaryotic cells
C) Have no DNA at all
✅ Correct! Prokaryotes (like bacteria) have no true nucleus — their DNA lies free in the cytoplasm as a "nucleoid" — and they lack membrane-bound organelles like mitochondria. They are also generally smaller, and they certainly do have DNA. This is the single biggest division in biology.
Q4: Which set of features is found ONLY in plant cells, never in animal cells?
A) Nucleus and mitochondria
B) Cell wall and chloroplast
C) Ribosomes and cell membrane
✅ Correct! Cell wall (cellulose) and chloroplast are exclusive to plant cells. Nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes and the cell membrane are found in BOTH plant and animal cells, so they can't be the distinguishing features. Centrioles, by contrast, are typically found only in animal cells.
Q5: The large central vacuole in a plant cell is mainly responsible for — पौधे की कोशिका की बड़ी रिक्तिका का मुख्य काम क्या है?
A) Producing energy for the cell
B) Storing water/cell sap and keeping the cell firm (turgid)
C) Controlling cell division
✅ Correct! The large central vacuole stores cell sap (mostly water) and keeps the plant cell turgid (firm). This turgidity is why well-watered plants stand upright and wilting plants droop — the vacuoles have lost water. This connects back to the basic-section idea of why plants stay upright.
